Where precision meets emotion
The Inspiration
Born and raised in the vastness of the Nambia windswept plains and in South Africa.
Africa gifted me with an ingrained sensitivity to the smallest fluctuations in the environment. My work concerns gradual, dangerously quiet change. Loss and natural disaster and an enormous appreciation for Nature’s self-healing abilities.
I draw, often using the most fragile of papers with pen and ink to restore an inner order for myself as a spectator. I aim to seek and reveal the stark beauty of nature denuded of human presence and the capacity of nature to renew itself. I draw to offer a channel to things still beyond my horizon, the flashpoints between what I know, what I feel and what suddenly might be.
My mediums include paint, pen and ink, graphite, woodcut, mono-typing and Lino cut, collage and a favorite of mine… directly onto walls to create enveloping environments.
I live and work in Munich and Zonquasdrift, South Africa, influenced by a European family history marked by the trauma of the last wars and my African childhood in which I was privileged to have heard distant drumbeats of secret ceremonies on moonless nights.
Seeking a positive investigation using different tools to express what surges beneath the surface, I enrolled in the Munich Academy of Arts, after half a lifetime had passed since Johannesburg School of Art in Africa.
Die Inspiration
Geboren und aufgewachsen in den weiten, windgepeitschten Ebenen Namibias und Südafrikas.
Afrika hat mir eine tief verwurzelte Sensibilität für die kleinsten Veränderungen in der Umwelt geschenkt. Meine Arbeit befasst sich mit allmählichen, gefährlich stillen Veränderungen. Mit Verlust und Naturkatastrophen und einer enormen Wertschätzung für die Selbstheilungskräfte der Natur.
Ich zeichne, oft mit Feder und Tinte auf hauchdünnem Papier, um für mich als Betrachter eine innere Ordnung wiederherzustellen. Ich möchte die karge Schönheit der Natur ohne menschliche Präsenz und die Fähigkeit der Natur, sich selbst zu erneuern, suchen und offenbaren. Ich zeichne, um einen Zugang zu Dingen zu schaffen, die noch außerhalb meines Horizonts liegen, zu den Schnittpunkten zwischen dem, was ich weiß, dem, was ich fühle, und dem, was plötzlich sein könnte.
Zu meinen Medien gehören Farbe, Feder und Tinte, Graphit, Holzschnitt, Monotypie und Linolschnitt, Collage und mein Lieblingsmedium ... direkt auf Wänden, um einhüllende Umgebungen zu schaffen.
Ich lebe und arbeite in München und Zonquasdrift, Südafrika, beeinflusst von einer europäischen Familiengeschichte, die vom Trauma der letzten Kriege geprägt ist, und meiner afrikanischen Kindheit, in der ich das Privileg hatte, in mondlosen Nächten die fernen Trommelschläge geheimer Zeremonien zu hören.
Auf der Suche nach einer positiven Auseinandersetzung mit verschiedenen Mitteln, um das auszudrücken, was unter der Oberfläche brodelt, schrieb ich mich an der Münchner Akademie der Bildenden Künste ein, nachdem seit meinem Studium an der Johannesburg School of Art in Afrika ein halbes Leben vergangen war.
Meet Antoinette
Born in the windswept landscapes of Namibia, Antoinette von Saurma creates visual poetry where precision meets emotion. Her work—a delicate choreography of black, blue, and white—emerges from the liminal spaces between perception and feeling. As a master student under Professor Jorinde Voigt and with exhibitions spanning from Moscow to Munich, New York to Cape Town, her art is a profound exploration of identity, trauma, and the unspoken.

Antoinette von Saurma wurde in der windgepeitschten Landschaft Namibias geboren und schafft visuelle Poesie, in der Präzision auf Emotion trifft. Ihre Arbeiten – eine zarte Choreografie aus Schwarz, Blau und Weiß – entstehen aus den Grenzbereichen zwischen Wahrnehmung und Gefühl. Als Masterstudentin bei Professorin Jorinde Voigt und mit Ausstellungen von Moskau über München und New York bis nach Kapstadt ist ihre Kunst eine tiefgründige Auseinandersetzung mit Identität, Trauma und dem Unausgesprochenen.
